kajnikaj

In a small town in rural Poland, a photographer grapples with the distinct ordinariness of this place—and devises an atmospheric series that might grant her a means of escape

2018 - 2020

it was never about my grand-aunt’s asphyxiation

My father died unexpectedly, leaving me as a head of family. Transition into a full grown up took me almost five years in trauma, pain and desperate need for being silly, careless and happy. At first I could not take any photographs at all, but after a year I was reminded of this story about my grand-aunt, who was buried twice and it became my passkey to thinking about death more lightly, without guilt. This way I could explore my feelings and fantasies in a safer manner for my mental health.

Over the course of time idea of dying has ingrained in me, became a natural part of my being and gave me peace.

laika come back!

Laika was a Soviet space dog who was one of the first animals in space and the first to orbit the Earth. This experiment was performed to prove that a living organism could survive being launched into orbit and continue to function under conditions of weakened gravity. In fact Laika died within hours from overheating and the true cause and time of her death were not made public until 2002

Sputnik 2 was not designed to be retrievable, and it had always been accepted that Laika would die. The mission sparked a debate across the globe on the mistreatment of animals and animal testing in general to advance science.

Series of photo collages and illustrations were self-published as a zin to draw attention to deceitful relation between the dogs and human kind.
